						Marathon Better *Default* Icons
"Hacked" into shape by Justin J. Goeres (jgoeres@gac.edu)

Credit also to Bungie Corp., since they made the original icons and probably deserve credit.

Howdy. I, like "Ed," got sick of those old, boring Marathon file icons, so I downloaded "Ed's" collection of better icons, but then I got sick of pasting them one by one onto all my files.

These two resource files (You'll need ResEdit!!!) contain two different sets of icons for Marathon. One is Ed's cool set, the other is Bungie's original, boring set. Installing the cool icons as per the following guidelines will, interestingly enough, make Ed's cool icons the "default" icons for Marathon, and they'll be used on your Marathon files AUTOMATCALLY, saving you lotsa effort!!! Cool, huh?

OK, I almost promise you that this will in no way screw up your computer, your Marathon, your marriage, or anything else, but I can't really promise for sure 'cuz someone might be stupid or this junk might get corrupted somewhere or something, so *USE THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK*. There, I said it. I'm not responsible for anything *YOU* do to your own computer (, Stupid). Don't come banging on my door 'cuz you screwed up.

OK, with that out of the way, we'll get to the instructions. (hahah, long README, huh?)

***WARNING: IF YOU DON'T LIKE TO READ INSTRUCTIONS AND THINK YOU CAN DO THIS BY
YOURSELF, AT LEAST READ THE CAVEAT AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS DOCUMENT FIRST!!***
																																																														THANKS.

			1)	Launch ResEdit (you can get it lots of places, probably ftp from Apple, even...Check
						around.)

			2)	In ResEdit, open your "Marathon" application. You should probably make a copy of it
first, but (from experience) changing icon resources hardly ever (i.e. it's never
happened to me but I hafta say that) screws things up, so make a copy and DON'T
BLAME ME IF YOU DON'T. (I didn't, and nothing happened, but oh, well.)

			3)	Also in ResEdit, open the "Custom Icon rsrcs" file that should have come in this
						archive.

			4)	Make the "Custom Icon rsrcs" window active, and choose "Select All" from the "Edit"
menu and then select "Copy" from the same ("Edit"....Duh.) menu.

			5)	Click over in the "Marathon" window, hold down the Command key, and click ONCE on
					  each of the following resource groups: icl4, icl8, ICN#, ics#, ics4, ics8.

			6) Press the DELETE key. Those groups will disappear. (You DELETEd them. :) )

			7)	Now select "Paste" from the Edit menu. YOU'RE ALMOST DONE!!!

			8) Quit the Finder or Restart your Mac. In either case, as the Finder (re)loads, hold down
the Command and Option keys. When it asks if you want to "rebuild the desktop on
<Your Startup Disk Here>" click OK (or whatever the affirmative is). Then wait wait
wait wait wait. When it finishes rebuilding, your new Marathon icons should appear!!!

Easy, huh? Prolly didn't take more than ten minutes or so, did it? And look at how neat everything looks now!!!

I don't want any money for this. Haha, I couldn't even ask for any, seeing as how 99% of it wasn't even my work. If you'd like, please please please send me e-mail (jgoeres@gac.edu) regarding this. That would really make my day. I should be doing homework, but I'm up late writing this for YOUR benefit, so please do me a favor and support my ego. Don't send me a chain letter, though. :)

CAVEAT: (Yeah, it WAS too good to be true). The reason I included the original icons in resource format was because the "Marathon v1.1 Updater" from Bungie won't work if you've changed the icon resources. Yeah, God forbid those crazy hackers change the ICONS!!!! If you ever update, at least with the currently available updater, you'll need to repeat the above procedure using the "Original Icon rsrcs" file instead of the Custom one to "undo" what you did in the first place. After updating, just go through the whole procedure again to "redo" it. Sorry, there's not much I figure I can do about that. Maybe I'll AppleScript it someday.

Hey, thanks for reading all the way down to here!!! Really, I mean that. Thanks. I'll make sure to read all of your read-me someday. :)

Happy SPNK-ing!
